Hi guys, I hope you’re all having another great day! I’ve been reading and reviewing so much! It’s honestly because I’m off on a break and have been reading a lot from the amount of time I have on my hands. I’m literally going through one book a day. Anyway, this is my review to White Cat by Holly Black and is the first book in The Curse Workers Trilogy.

Cassel comes from a shady, magical family of con artists and grifters. He doesn’t fit in at home or at school, so he’s used to feeling like an outsider. He’s also used to feeling guilty; he killed his best friend, Lila, years ago.

But when Cassel begins to have strange dreams about a white cat, and people around him are losing their memories, he starts to wonder what really happened to Lila. In his search for answers, he discovers a wicked plot for power that seems certain to succeed. But Cassel has other ideas and a plan to con the conmen.

This book was a really enjoyable read! Cassel was a character who was smart and deceptive—the really good kind. The greatest thing about Cassel is that his voice comes out strongly despite being written from a female author, which not a lot of authors have really pulled off in the past. At some points in this book, the unreliable narrative tone works really well from the direction the plot is going in. Really great job with the narration!

The secondary characters were also well developed, but not as much as I’d liked them to be. They each had traits to them that were introduced, but I still felt like there could have been a little more. I still thought that the secondary characters were well developed. Maybe we might see a little more in the next book since we already have a foundation of the characters in this book.

The plot pacing was done nicely. I felt really bad for Cassel, and even though the “I want to be normal phase” is what every main character says, Black showed this really well with Cassel. I never felt that Cassel ever got out of role or was whining about his life and the situations he was in—he always found a way to turn the situation around into what he wanted. A lot of the plot twists were the ones I didn’t even see coming!

And OMG THAT ENDING. I FELT SO BAD FOR CASSEL. But it’s so worth making me want to read the next book!

Overall, this book was a great read, and dare I say that it even went beyond my expectations? I guess it did! :D

I would recommend this to anyone who likes Fantasy that’s not info-dumping, with smart main characters and well moving plot with lots of twists! :D You’ll be sure to enjoy this book as much as I did!
